________________________________

In case you are not familiar with what has happened recently, here is some supplementary material:

<RyuuguuKomachi> No, I’m not playing this game again

<RyuuguuKomachi> at least not here

<RyuuguuKomachi> maybe at komike

<RyuuguuKomachi> k but anyway good luck ya’ll

Both Muii and Magister have said goodbye to the channel. It is truly a shame that something like this has occurred due to the effects of one user. While I can’t do anything about the situation with #hisouten at the moment, I feel that I should begin hosting tournaments again. Perhaps actually complete one pass through one of these series this time. Hopefully, this will breathe some life back into the community. Unlike Meidou 1, I’ll actually be able to host this one without any change of schedule, since there is no longer an issue with organization.

(I know it potentially cuts into Finals Week for some of you guys; sorry! It’s not a ranbats series like Meidou 1, however, so missing one won’t hurt.)

Host: Aristocrat/Nonoriri

TOURNAMENT DATES:

March 24: 「Meidou 2.1」

April 21: 「Meidou 2.2」

May 19: 「Meidou 2.3」

June 23: 「Meidou 2.4」

August 18: 「Meidou 2.5」

September 22: 「Meidou 2.6」

Next Meidou: 「冥道 2.1」 @ March 24, 2012, 19:00 UTC. NA at 19:00 EST.

This is a Touhou Hisoutensoku NA/EU tournament series, to be hosted over the next half-year in a monthly fashion. If you heard about this from #hisouten then you probably have the correct version already, but if not, update your game client to v1.10a here. (Your SWR client should be updated to v1.06 as well. v1.06a optional but not necessary.)

ALL TIMES MENTIONED FROM HERE ON ARE IN UTC UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

For each Meidou, the EU tournament will begin at 19:00 UTC, and the NA tournament will begin at 19:00 EST. You can check the UTC time here, or if you are lazy, type !tourney in IRC and it will show the time remaining (maybe; not sure if my scripts carried over correctly. If it doesn’t work, message me and I will fix it).

REGISTRATION:
The only registration requirement is access to Rizon’s IRC network. If you do not have an IRC client, use Rizon’s webchat interface. To register, follow these steps:

Sign into Rizon’s IRC with the nick you will be using for the tournament, preferably at least 30 minutes before the tournament starts. EU players can register at any time; NA participants will have to wait until the EU tournament is finished to register.

Join #hisoutensoku.

Identify your nick with NickServ. (If you have not registered a nick, follow this guide.)

Type !register. A message will appear and indicate that you have been added to the tournament.

As might be expected, IRC access and NickServ identification are required for participation in the tourament; you are automatically voiced when you join #hisoutensoku if you are identified with NickServ. Registration is open as of the time of this post, and will last until the tournament officially starts. However, please try to register at least 5 minutes before the deadline.

NOTE: Please forward your ports so that you may host. If you do not know how to forward ports, visit http://portforward.com/. This requirement is in place to ensure that we do not hit a situation where neither participant is able to host. Have Hamachi or Soku Lobby on hand if you can’t host just to be safe. If you are absolutely unable to host under any circumstances, inform me of the fact beforehand so that I can seed you to minimize the chance of running into someone else who cannot host.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS

This tournament uses the double-elimination format, with best-of-three sets (the first player to win two matches takes the set), with the exception of the Grand Finals, which is best-of-five (first to three wins).

You may use any character and change characters/decks whenever needed, although it is recommended that you do not change after a win. This tournament does not rigorously enforce character lock.

ON TOURNAMENT DAY:

Show up in #hisoutensoku (NOT #hisouten) on Rizon, preferably at least 15 minutes before the tournament begins. Register for the tournament.

Wait the tournament to start.

Play your matches against your designated opponent; after a set has been decided, please report your results via the !report trigger (type !report win if you won, and !report loss if you lost. You will automatically advance.)

USEFUL THINGS TO HAVE:
(These are neither required nor necessary for the tournament, but they do enhance your soku experience.)

Tensokukan stats tracker. Also this.

SWRSToys

When playing a match, you are expected to save all replays, both for the replay pack and for the convenience of settling disputes in case any arise.

IMPORTANT RULES:

Things that are forbidden:

Iku 5card -> grab glitch.

Any sort of hack that provides an unfair advantage. (Autoblockers, external macros, etc.)

Matches in which one of the above is used are invalidated if someone makes a complaint; the other player can choose to take a default win or have a rematch.

Do not pick a field with a bright white or yellow background as they make bullets difficult to see, unless both parties have no problem with it. (Specifically: Shore of Misty Lake, Scarlet Mansion Clock Tower, Fusion Reactor Core, Reactor Elevator, Bhava-Agra.) Scarlet Devil Mansion Library is the widely accepted stage for tournament play.

If you no-show, you will be de-registered.

If a desync occurs, either settle it by yourselves or have a rematch. In the event that there is significant lag that makes a round completely unplayable, message me on IRC and I will do something about it.

tl;dr Instructions

Register before the tournament starts.

Show up in #hisoutensoku before the tournament starts.

Tell the bot your match results with !report win or !report loss, and play your upcoming opponents.

Enjoy the carnage.

IRC Channel Notes:

The useful IRC triggers available in the channel are as follows:

!host – Displays your IP and port for convenience. Usage: !host <optional_port_number>. If !host does not work, use !soku.

!ip – Get the IP of a particular nickname. May be inaccurate. Usage: !ip <nick>

!whohosted – Displays a list of the last five hosting IPs. Usage: !whohosted, !whohosted10 for a list of the 10 most recent IPs.

!tourney – Displays a countdown to the tournament’s start time to save participants from doing time zone conversions.

The tournament itself is also entirely automated (and thus will progress rather quickly), although I will watch over it. All triggers can be seen via !triggers and require your nick to be voiced (+v) for them to work. To avoid channel flood, please use triggers via PM (/notice Nonoriri !<trigger>) whenever possible. The important ones are:

!register – Adds your current nick to the tournament.

!unregister – Removes your current nick from the tournament.

!report – This tells the bot about the results of your last battle. Both participants must report the correct result for it to work (The winner must type !report win, and the loser must type !report loss). You will not advance unless both players typed agreeing results. In case of a dispute, notify me (Nonoriri) and I will sort it out.

!opponent – Displays your current opponent, if any. If you do not have an opponent, it will show “Empty”.

!bracket – Displays the bracket entered. Brackets are formatted in this manner: round[w/l]#, where w/l denote the winners’ and losers’ brackets respectively, and # is the round number.Round 4 of the winners’ bracket, therefore, would be retrieved via !bracket roundw4. (Note: The zero-loss bracket only has even round numbers, as they play one round for every two rounds in the one-loss bracket.)

!list – Displays a list of the tournament registrants.

P.S. If anyone is wondering why the old blog post links to Doujinstyle don’t work anymore, suffices to say Doujinstyle underwent some change of administration and links to old content no longer work. Here’s why.
P.P.S. Anyone willing to stream the tournament should contact me and try and get together with other potential commentators for the hype.

After a one-week poll in our IRC channel, the top voted plays are:

EU: 28A, 28B, 32B and 33B (four of them since they all got the same number of vote)
NA: 21B, 48B and 57B
(the play numbers match to this list)

And among them, here are my picks:

EU: 28A/32B
NA: 57B

Which means the winners of the most favorite play prizes are:

EU: Leerius
NA: SuwakoMoriya

Leerius demonstrated a solid performance in both of those games. Got the Patchouli well covered, didn’t commit much mistake, and got some tactics thrown in here and there. I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect Patchouli, but she is smooth enough to be a role model for those who would like to pick her up, either as a new character or as an existing intermediate user.

SuwakoMoriya plays a solid Suwako as ever. I might appreciate some interesting/unusual playstyle, but if that means making too many meaningless moves and exposing self to openings for opponent to take advantage of, I’m afraid I can’t exactly appreciate it. Comparing to that, SuwakoMoriya got the drill on Suwako, which is an interesting character to begin with.

So congratulations, Leerius and SuwakoMoriya. I will get in touch with you in IRC channel for your prize. And thank you everyone for participating in the tournament, hope you had an enjoyable time. I will look forward to seeing you again in our next tournament.

This is a one-day Touhou Hisoutensoku Tournament, and one of the few #hisouten tournaments to actually have prizes! If you heard about this from #hisouten then you probably have the correct version already, but if not, update your game client to v1.10a here. (Your SWR client should be updated to v1.06 as well. v1.06a optional.)

ALL TIMES MENTIONED FROM HERE ON ARE IN UTC UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

The EU tournament will begin at 19:00 UTC, and the NA tournament will begin at 19:00 EST (00:00 UTC on Dec. 24).

Have Hamachi on hand if you can’t host just to be safe.

This tournament does NOT enforce character lock of any sort since it inconveniences the participants for no good reason.

Iku 5card -> grab glitch.

Since this tournament has prizes, it is required that you save all your replays. Failure to do so may result in disqualification of eligibility to receive prizes.

tl;dr Instructions

So 2011 is coming to an end and it’s time for year end tournament. To make it special and more exciting, prizes will be offered in this tournament. Contestants placed in the first 4 rankings will be rewarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and consolation prize respectively as rewarded in Rizon lottery (i.e. 120 days, 60 days, 30 days and 10 days of colored vhost). And to make it even more exciting, I’m thinking of possibly throwing in physical prizes if there are enough contestants joining the tournament. One of the plans is rewarding the prize to the first place winner and the most favorite play (based on voting plus my personal picking), or just the favorite play with a higher-valued prize.

With that said, I need your inputs and ideas on the tournament. First, please pick your preferred date of the tournament by voting in the poll below:

Take Our Poll

Second, please let me know by commenting to this post what kinds of physical prize you would like to see and how they should be rewarded. Of course, the cost would have to be reasonable – don’t expect some grand, expensive prizes as I’m just throwing them in to make things more fun. I don’t mind sponsorships though so that we can offer better prizes. Anyway, someone suggested a J-List gift certificate which sounds like a pretty good idea to me, the prize winner would have the flexibility to choose what (s)he likes there. Any more ideas?

Edit 1: if you have no idea what vhost is, type “/msg hostserv help” on IRC. Normally vhost cannot be colored, nor can it be a single word (i.e. at least have to have one dot). The prizes will exempt those conditions.

Edit 2: yes, there will be a NA and a EU tournament, separated. They will be held on the same day though unless there’s reason for otherwise.

Edit 3: this is guu by the way, in case you can’t tell.

Update: looks like December 23rd is the most preferred date so the tournament will take place on that date. Deep has provided sponsorship for NA tournament and he would like $30 contributed to 1st prize and $10 contributed to 2nd prize. I will personally throw in another $20 for the most favorite play based on voting plus my personal pick (i.e. I will pick one from the 3 replays that get the top votes). So, the prizes for NA tournament will be:

1st place: $30 J-List gift certificate + 120-day colored and/or one-worded vhost
2nd place: $10 J-List gift certificate + 60-day colored and/or one-worded vhost
3rd place: 30-day colored and/or one-worded vhost
4th place: 10-day colored and/or one-worded vhost
Most favorite play: $20 J-List gift certificate (NB: 1st place winner will be excluded from entitlement of this prize)

Many thanks to Deep for the NA sponsorship. Prizes for EU will be announced later (*coughaswearewaitingforsponsorshipcough*).

Aristocrat will post the details of the tournament later so stay tuned.

Update 2: here are the prizes of EU tournament. Unfortunately there is no sponsor for EU tournament so the prizes cannot be as nice as NA’s.

When there are 12 participants or more:
1st place: $20 J-List gift certificate + 120-day colored and/or one-worded vhost
2nd place: $10 J-List gift certificate + 60-day colored and/or one-worded vhost

Five Orb Break
FOB: A Touhou Hisoutensoku Tournament.

When: Every Saturday before the 2nd to last Sunday 18:00 UTC 4 PM CST (If confused ask on #hisouten on irc.rizon.net. Also date is subject to change on account of holidays and such. I’ll try to make it the topic on #hisouten as soon as I know.)

Where: #hisoutensoku @ irc.rizon.net

Sign ups start two hours before the tourney. /query Muii a message to enter.
Stream: http://twitch.tv/muii

The point of this tourney is so that players can get people to play at least for a certain amount of time. Basically I want you to donate a certain amount of your time to this game. I WANT SOKU TO BE PLAYED. If you think your game is strong, prove it. If you think your game is weak, here is the time and the place for you to get advice and try to improve.

1. EU at 18:00 UTC. North American at 4 PM CST.
2. Round Robin format, everyone plays everyone. If a large amount of players show up, it is possible that we will switch to a team tournament style.
3. Sets will be best 2 out of 3.
4. Winner cannot change character, but free to change decks.
5. In case of desync, restart the match.
6. You do not need to save replays. However, they would be nice to have should there be a debate over who won.
7. Winner must report match results #FOBresults, in 2 – 1/0 format. If we switch to team tournament this will not be necessary. Also keep a record of your scores, there is a chance of human error.
8. In case of extreme lag, attempt to play it out. Refusing to do so will result in 1-2 loss for you. If both players refuse to play/refuse to take loss, will be determined by coin toss or something. “You guys fight over it.” -Muii
9. Iku grab glitch not allowed.
10. Players can use lobby to play, and hamachi, if both players cannot get connected to each other. (As 1.10a has been released we will be using that as the standard, making lobby incompatible, not saying hamachi only if you can’t connect, just keep a copy of 1.10 so you can use lobby if preferred. Both players have to agree to this though.)

Notes:
If Round Robin format, prepare for a large case of disorganization and constant questions of “Who am I playing?” Do be aware that you do have to play everyone and if you see someone you haven’t played hosting or asking for a host please join them/host for them.

Also if Round Robin format, prepare to play about an hour or more, if you play on keyboard your fingers WILL hurt. Feel free to take small breaks between games to make sure your fingers don’t lock up on you.

If any further questions feel free to ask Muii on #hisouten @ irc.rizon.net.

Comments:
Alright, alright, seems like I was a bit slow at picking up the news of this tournament. Can’t really blame me though, since THFNN is not exactly the same netplay community as #hisouten, being the infamous Steam group. If you have a Steam account (and if you don’t have Steam in 2011, shame on you), all you have to do to invade THFNN is to get in their chat room.

The notable things about this tournament that differ from previous ones are as follows:

It actually has prizes, in the form of Steam titles.

The majority of the expected participant pool is of much lower skill level than those participating in normal #hisouten tournaments.

This means that you have a good chance of placing well in this tourney, even if you aren’t that skilled at 12.3. The fact that prizes are actually available for this tournament is also a good incentive for anyone interested in those. Join up, and enjoy the casual-friendly tournament!

The point of this tourney is so that players can get people to play at least for a certain amount of time. Basically I want you to donate a certain amount of your time to this game. So from 4PM PDT I WANT SOKU TO BE PLAYED. If you think your game is strong, prove it. If you think your game is weak, here is the time and the place for you to get advice and try to improve.

Rules:
1. North American Tournament
2. Round Robin format, everyone plays everyone.
3. Sets will be best 2 out of 3.
4. Winner cannot change character, but free to change decks.
5. In case of desync, restart the match. If something seems funky about the match, try to finish before restarting.
6. Save replays. Emphasis on this. Send them to me with /query Muii after the tourney. This is for the sake of collection. A replay pack will be uploaded afterwards. I will upload the bracket every once and awhile, it’s your responsibilty to look at it and confirm the scores. Usually this is not a problem because both players agree; however, this is why we have replays.
7. Winner must report match results to #FOBresults. Recommended format: (Winner Name) 2 – (Loser Name) 1/0. Do not use #FOBresults for chatting please. Also keep a personal record of your matches, just in case of human error on my part.
8. In a special twist, we’ll be using a tier list style system. If you win 2-0 you get 2 points, if you win 2-1 you both get 1 point, and if you lose 0-2 you get 0 points. You can be a top tier Hisouten player!
9. In case of extreme lag, if unplayable both players get 1 point and 0 wins, if 1 player has unplayable lag with more than 2 players they are disqualified.
10. Iku grab glitch not allowed.
11. Players can use lobby to play if both cannot host. If both players cannot get connected to each other, each will get 1 point and 0 wins.

In response to a few complaints from the last FOB:

The Tourney is too disorganized!
>Honestly the whole idea was to have a lot of players in one room and get a lot of matches done in a short span of time. This is designed to be a more casual event, just get in the room and play everyone on the list (that I will post beforehand this time). It’s easier on the player if he can set his own pace on matches.

The Tourney takes too long!
>There’s no helping this. RR with so many people takes forever. At most 3 matches per set, at most 5 minutes per match, and 17 sets equals a very long time. I recommend setting the whole day aside (yes, for a poverty game), eating lunch beforehand, and stretching or something. I won’t be enforcing it, but players are welcome to take a break should they feel they need one, just don’t push like 10 minutes and make the tournament even longer. For the record, last FOB took about 4 and a half hours, with 18 players. If you need an extended break for real life issue or anything talk to me about it and we’ll see if we can work it out.
I’m also making it earlier; however, if enough people tell me to change the time I will.

Peronal Comments based on last FOB
1. Read the rules. YES, sign ups are on the day of the tourney, not whenever you finish reading this.
2. If you come to spec or something, please don’t post your IP in the room, it’s confusing.
3. I’ll be releasing the chart every once in awhile, please keep a record of your matches and confirm with the chart.
4. #hisoutensoku is the place to chat, not #FOBresults.
5. This is a community gathering, if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Ex. Why does Alice vs Sakuya feel unwinnable?, etc. At the end of the tourney everyone will have played you and you have a very good chance of getting feedback. The dumbest questions are the ones left unasked.

TOURNAMENT DATE:

July 24: TWFL 4

This is a ONE DAY Hisoutensoku EU-only Tournament. If you heard about this from #hisouten then you probably have the correct version already, but if not, update your game client to v1.10 here. (Your SWR client should be updated to v1.06 as well.)

ALL TIMES MENTIONED FROM HERE ON ARE IN UTC UNLESS MENTIONED OTHERWISE.

The EU tournament will begin at 18:00 UTC. You can check the UTC time here, or if you are lazy, type !tourney in IRC and it will show the time remaining.

REGISTRATION:
The only registration requirement is access to Rizon’s IRC network. If you do not have an IRC client, use Rizon’s webchat interface. To register, follow these steps:

Sign into Rizon’s IRC with the nick you will be using for the tournament.

Have Hamachi on hand if you can’t host just to be safe.

You may use any character and change characters whenever needed, although it is recommended that you do not change characters or decks after a win. This tournament does NOT enforce character lock for the simple reason that it inconveniences the participants.

ON TOURNAMENT DAY:

Show up in #hisoutensoku (NOT #hisouten) on Rizon, preferably at least 15 minutes before the tournament begins. Use the nick you registered under.

Iku 5card -> grab glitch.

If you no-show, you will automatically lose the rounds in which you are involved. If both participants in a match fail to show, they are eliminated.

Usage: !soku <optional_port_number>.

The tournament itself is also entirely automated, although I will watch over it.

Rules:

North American Tournament

Round Robin format, everyone plays everyone.

ets will be best 2 out of 3.

Winner cannot change character, but free to change decks.

In case of desync, restart the match.

Winner must report match results to Muii by /query Muii. Include score and who played.

In a special twist, we’ll be using a tier list style system. If you win 2-0 you get 2 points, if you win 2-1 you both get 1 point, and if you lose 0-2 you get 0 points. You can be a top tier hisouten player!

In case of extreme lag, if unplayable both players get 1 point, if 1 player has unplayable lag with more than 2 players they are disqualifed.

Iku grab glitch not allowed.

Players can use lobby to play, and hamachi if needed. I will set up a hamachi room. If both players cannot get connected to each other, each will get 1 point.

Rules 6 and 7 are subject to change person should there be too huge a number for me to handle alone.
